A piece of dialogue in "The Fall Guy" is causing controversy before its theatrical premiere.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in this action-comedy directed by David Leitch. Hannah Waddingham's character, Gail Meyer, is said to make a reference to Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's troubled relationship.
Blunt plays director Jody Moreno, and Waddingham plays an executive producer who walks into a trailer looking messy and says, "It's like Amber and Johnny were just in here."
People have said bad things about this line on social media sites like X (formerly Twitter). One user called it an offensive joke about domestic violence and asked why movies still have these kinds of lines in 2024.
In 2015, Depp and Heard's marriage ended after 15 months. Their public split in 2019 led to a court case, in which Depp sued Heard for defamation over an opinion piece she wrote for the Washington Post in 2018. Both sides made shocking accusations in court, and in the end, the jury found in Depp's favor on all counts.
"The Fall Guy" is still set to come out in theaters this Friday, despite the debate.
