Rishi Sunak, the outgoing prime minister from the UK, has conceded loss in the legislative elections there. Ryanair posted a viral video taunting the British-Indian lawmaker shortly before this.
With his centre-left Labour Party poised to garner a significant majority, Keir Starmer is set to be Britain's next prime minister. Whereas Sunak's Conservative Party has so far only secured 70 of the 650 seats in parliament, Labour has already won more than 326.
Rishi Sunak had to contend with 14 years of anti-incumbency and questions over the cost-of-living crisis approaching the election. Years of instability and in-fighting also plagued the Conservative Party, leading to five separate prime ministers since the Brexit vote of 2016.
Sunak lost his parliament seat, but Ryanair kindly offered him a spot on one of their flights. Renowned for its lighthearted social media strategy, Ryanair's tweet quickly became viral on X and attracted over 2.6 million views and hundreds of delighted comments. Among the comments were "First truly funny ad I've seen in ages" and "He's not even got a window seat."
Sunak shocked Westminster by calling the election earlier than required in May, with the Conservatives lagging Labour by almost 20 points in opinion polls. Although he aimed to close the difference, the campaign turned out to be disastrous.
Sunak's highly attacked appearance on ITV's This Morning chat show, when he was shown waiting his turn behind Britain's most tattooed woman, marked the campaign's finale. This strange incident ended a demanding campaign for the leader of Indian background.
