The Indian National Rupee (INR) on Thursday fell to 68.52 against the US dollar. This is an all-time low vs US dollar for the Indian currency. This has happened for the first time in history. Current Account Deficit and net Foreign Investment becoming adverse are said to be the culprits.
To put the fall in perspective, the rupee has lost 7.7 percent of its value so far in 2018. Ours is the worst performing currency in the Asia continent. The second worst performer is the Philippine peso
However, worries are inflated if some experts are to be believed. Economist Ananth Narayan says, "Even today after all the depreciation, our real effective exchange rate shows we are 15 percent over-valued, which means we have more room to correct."
Ekta Batra, a business journalist, says, ".Look at our resilience versus other Emerging Markets since the past 5 years. I am hereby presenting EM currency depreciation percentages since Jan 2013. Rupee Depreciation is by 25%; Indonesia Rupiah 46%; Russian Ruble 107%; South African Rand 63.6%; Turk Lira 160.1%; Brazil Real 88.3%; and Mex Peso 57%."
