This is very big. Days after the Income Tax Department seized this month Rs 160 CR cash and about 100 kg of bullion after raids at several premises of a road construction firm in Tamil Nadu, it (the I-T department) has reportedly discovered Rs 550 crore worth land documents at the Bowring Institute Club in Bengaluru.
Why were documents, gold and cash worth hundreds of crores in the club in the first place? A businessman named Avinash Kukreja, a member of the club, had kept them in three lockers. For long, these lockers remained unclaimed. Since this owner of the lockers didn't turn up to take away his belongings even after a notice was issued by the Club management, the management decided to break open the lockers. This is when they found the below haul.
1. Land documents whose worth is estimated to be to the tune of Rs 550 crore.
2. Rs 3.90 crore in cash.
3. Diamonds worth Rs 7.80 crore.
4. 600 gm of gold biscuits, 5 gold coins of 10 gm each, etc.
5. Signed but undated chequebooks.
The IT department is busy looking into the matter. The investigating officials are suspecting that the land documents found in Kukreja's locker belong to a Cabinet minister in the Congress-JDS government of Karnakata.
