Rose Guitarinal

Ranjan Pramod has once proved beyond doubt that he very well knew the grammar of commercial filming in Mollywood. But with his directorial assignments, the director seems to be in moving in chaotic  lanes with his own poor scripting ruining his plans. What that have happened with his `Photographer' seems to have repeated in his second outing as a director in  `Rose Guitarinal'. With another tried and tested story, Ranjan seems to have failed in the challenge to give a new spin to the age-old tale. The movie also lacks the drama and emotions- barring a few episodes, the viewer aren't absorbed into the world of the lead trio, reflecting on the sketchy written material.

The movie has Manu as Joe Alex , an young guy passionately called as Appu by his family. Though working in a private firm, he is in deep love with his friend from childhood Thara John(Atmiya Rajan of `Mankothyparavai' fame) . Appu is a regular in Thara's home and accompanies her daily to her workplace where she is in the final training for a job as air-hostess. Thara has a little clues about Appu's intentions , but  is quite reclined and tender girl who likes to be the pet of all. When  Appu's parents are planning to move out of the city to their inherited village, Appu is left lonely in the city. As he decides to uncover his decisions about life to Thara, the handsome CEO of Thara's company, Shyam (Richard), falls for her and reveals his love for her. Though from different strata's of the society, Thara is little reluctant about the cozy life styles but is impressed with the gentle and genuine character of Shyam. What happens thereafter forms the rest of the plot.

When attempting a triangular love story, it  is imperative that the script  captures the spirit of the period appropriately. But here there is no sincere effort on that and the writing gives away after a point .The movie plummets in the post-interval portions. Apart from the execution of the material that's average, the screenplay gets taxing and boring after a point .Some real experiments in direction  like ` an entire song in a single shot' and even a fight sequence in the backdrop of a song backfires with little support to the forward motion of the narratives. With some behaviours of the lead characters never explained, the movie also fails to give the necessary feel and the simmering confrontation in the climax is also charmless. Also by the final reels we are forced to ask the relevance of  such a title for a movie?

But Ranjan's lead players have supported his endeavour with fine acting. Newcomer Richard is natural to the core. . His dialogue delivery is near-perfect and body language, precise. With a killer smile and tremendous self-assurance, he is sure to turn the heartthrob of the new generation, if luck be in his favour. Manu once again proves his acting prowess and enact this intricate and demanding character in an authoritative style.  Atmiya puts forth her best efforts and looks pretty in fine costumes, but there's not much scope for her to display her acting prowess. Certain miscasts also turn the tale more sour

The technical side is but fine with good cinematography and lighting designs by Pappu. The movie but stretches leisurely in the second half making you look at the clock, now and then. The weird hairdo of the lead men also is quite embarrassing.

Shahbaz Aman's tunes and his attempts in creating `blues'  is strictly okay, though there are seven songs in the offer. But, none of the songs have the lasting power to linger in your memory as the new age lyrics like that of `Moonga' spoils the chances of much of them.

On the whole, `Rose Guitarinal'  is no patch on Ranjan Pramod's  earlier scripting  achievements. This 'fantasy-driven' film,  if you call by this genre '  is a big disappointment!
