Many youngsters might know Rishi Kapoor as son of Raj Kapoor and more importantly famous father of Ranbir Kapoor. Few movie lovers would know him as the loud middle class father of Do Dooni Char, grand father who wishes for one family photo in Kapoor and Sons. Some fans would have noticed his effortlessness as Rauf Lala in Agneepath and Mulk films. Yes, he is a great actor but once he was criminally under-utilised restricting him to only Romantic films.
But he mastered them so much even more then Dev Anand or Rajesh Khanna or Shashi Kapoor, he comes to mind as the most romantic lead on Indian Cinema. His boyish charm in Bobby and ease as a matured lover in Sagar, effortlessness in being rockstar on stage in Karz while playing a man who remembers his past life and his charm in Chandini is unparalleled. Many makers wanted to cast in them movies as a romantic side kick to action stars like Amitabh Bachchan but he never minded it.
He always said that he cannot be more dynamic on screen than Amitabh Bachchan and cannot aspire to be greater actor than him. While he said it out his respect and admiration and as a matter of fact in many interviews, people understood it as him looking to stick only to romantic movies and comedy roles. He proved beyond any doubt that he can play any role but his looks and the image that his debut movie, Bobby earned him never let him off.
Still he enjoyed his time on screen as a romantic lead, romancing some of the beautiful actors and skilled performers. He could stay his ground even in the company of beasts like Big B and he became a great friend of Amitabh as well. He got into trouble for his frankness and on the face nature, flamboyant and harsh comments, but he never tried to disown anything.
He accepted everything that came his way with dignity and even though his character seemed slightly difficult to handle, he has been always revered as one of the greatest friends anyone can have in the Industry. Later in his acting career, he got major chances to prove his versatility and he did not shy away from any opportunity to push himself and entertain audiences.
His son Ranbir Kapoor has become one of the biggest stars of Indian Cinema in the current generation and he ended his life as a happy camper at the age of 67. But we will miss his charming smile on screen and his ability to perform in any character and also his cheeky sense of humour, frank devil-may-care attitude as well. The legend will always be remembered and revered.
