Rolling Stones Announce 'Hackney Diamonds' – Their First Original Album in 16 Years

The Rolling Stones will release their first original studio album in 16 years this autumn, called Hackney Diamonds. The line-up, now in their seventies and eighties, teased fans with a cryptic advertisement in the Hackney Gazette newspaper and online.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood will discuss the new music during an interview on American TV host Jimmy Fallon's eponymous show at its London stage. This is the band's first venture into making original material since 2005's A Bigger Bang, and they are delivering this project just after drummer Charlie Watts died last month. Their last studio album was 2016's Blue & Lonesome, made up of blues covers.

Paul McCartney appears on it, playing bass on one track. Band touring drummer Steve Jordan was also featured, as were recordings that were made with Watts before he died.

The cryptic newspaper ad gave a website and phone number, cleverly leading to the album’s title. Hackney Diamonds was an old east London term for broken glass, seen commonly after windows were smashed during a robbery.

Speaking about the album, the band said excitedly, Hackney may be at the heart of Hackney Diamonds, but this is a truly global moment we want to share with fans around the world via YouTube.

The Rolling Stones, formed in the early 1960s, have scored eight No. 1 singles in Britain, including classics (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Paint It Black, and Honky Tonk Women. Their enduring legacy has been marked by bronze statues of Jagger and Richards unveiled in their hometown of Dartford, Kent, earlier this month.
