24-year-old Canadian actor Ryan Grantham, who was earlier charged with murdering his mother in March 2020, had also allegedly plotted to kill Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as per a statement by prosecutors during sentence hearings.
Grantham, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder over two years ago after initially being charged with first-degree murder, had shot his mother Barbara Whaite in the back of the head as she played the piano in their home on March 31, 2020, in Squamish, north of Vancouver. The actor portrayed the role of Jeffery Augustine in the CW series Riverdale in 2019.
The court was apparently informed that Ryan Grantham decided to kill his mother in order to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit in the future, including one against PM Justin Trudeau. Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly reportedly told the court, “Mr. Grantham was seeking to save his mother from something he was going to do. That is something different than altruism. Barbara Waite loved her son very much, was an excellent parent and in her mind had no reason to fear him.”
At his sentencing in June this year, Ryan Grantham read a statement in front of the court which said, “I cannot explain or justify my actions. I have no excuse. It hurts me to think about how badly I’ve wasted my life. In the face of something so horrible, saying sorry seems so pointless. But from every fiber of my being, I am sorry.”
