17-year-old wrestler Ritika Phogat, cousin of champion wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat, allegedly died by suicide. The Haryana police suspect that Ritika was upset over losing a wrestling tournament final by just 1 point.
The state-level wrestling competition was held in Rajasthan's Bharatpur from March 12 to 14. "Ritika, wrestler, and cousin of Babita Phogat, died allegedly by suicide on March 17. The reason behind it might have been her defeat at a recent wrestling tournament in Rajasthan. Investigation underway," Ram Singh Bishnoi, DSP, Charkhi Dadri, was quoted as saying. Ritika was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling of a room at her uncle and legendary wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat's house late Monday. Mahavir Phogat's life and the story of how he trained his two daughters Geeta and Babita inspired the 2016 Bollywood blockbuster Dangal, starring Aamir Khan.
Geeta Phogat, who became the first Indian woman wrestler to qualify for the Olympics in 2012, shared the news of Ritika's death on social media. "May Ritika, my little sister, my cousin, rest in peace. This is a very tragic time for my family. Ritika was a very able wrestler...don't know why she did this. Winning and losing is a part of life and no one should take such a drastic step," Geeta tweeted in Hindi.
