Jeff Bezos of Amazon, whose fortune stands at an estimated $109 billion, recently donated $98.5 million to homeless. While this seems like an awesome act of philanthropy, his critics are not falling for it.
If you take into consideration Bezos' fortune and the amount of tax concessions his company gets, the donation he just made is an eyewash. Says activist Qasim Rashid, "The donation impacts his wallet to the same tune if the median American worker gave $26. Amazon corp has paid $0 in federal taxes on its last $24B profits. If Amazon paid 35% corp tax it owed pre-Tax cut, it would have paid $8.4B in taxes —ie 85X more than $98.5M." He adds, "Amazon used tax loopholes & lobbied Fed Govt to eliminate its $4.2B/year corp taxes, didn’t pass on savings to its employees, & now wants praise for giving $98.5M one time to charity."
Meanwhile, French billionaire Bernard Arnault’s is pegged to overtake Bezos to become the world's richest person soon.
