A report published by The Print has said that 98% of faculty members at the top five IITs belong to upper-caste groups. Quoting Nature, a journal, the report adds that reservations haven't been implemented in the IITs.
Netizens are reacting to the report in different ways. In this section, we bring to you the views of those who are trying to analyze the problem.
Economic commentator Sri Thiruvadanthai said that the problem is supply-related. There are just not enough qualified candidates applying. You do need a PhD to be a professor and a decent one with some publications in a non-predatory journal, he wrote.
Twitter user Rishab Mukherjee wrote, You need a PhD + body of published research to apply for a full-time faculty position at an IIT. Do such people really need reservations to get through the door? The real problem is most likely a shortage of qualified applicants from under-represented categories.
Most Netizens, reacting to the report, opined that IITs will lose their status and worth if reservations are implemented and merit is compromised.
