Viral Acharya, the RBI deputy governor, has submitted his resignation. As per early reports, he will proceed to hold an academic job at the New York University Stern School of Business two months from now.
The reputed economist has not, so far, revealed why he is quitting. All that he has told a newspaper is this line: “A schoolteacher once told me: ‘When your work speaks for itself, do not interrupt’”.
With one of the four deputy governors quitting seven months after ex-Guv Urjit Patel called it quits, there is bound to be some criticism against the Narendra Modi government. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala has hit out, saying, "Government changes, but the problem of economic manhandling remains! RBI Dy Guv Viral Acharya adds his name to the long list of experts who attempted to show the ‘Mirror of Truth’ to the BJP regime. Four economic advisors, two RBI Governors (Raghuram Rajan and Patel), and a Niti Aayog VC (Arvind Panagariya) have resigned earlier!"
