In the 4th match of IPL between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals, Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin had dismissed the settled and dangerous Rajastha Royals batsman Jos Butler, by running him out, as Butler who was in non striker's end had come out of the crease, only to be dismissed.
Punjab had setup a competitive target of 185, and as Rajasthan Royals began their innings, Jos Butler had been scoring well from the beginning itself, and the team had lost just 1 wicket in 12 overs. While the situation was that Punjab can win only if Butler gets out, Ashwin ran out Butler as he crossed the crease before even Ashwin completed the delivery.
While there are previous similar instances when bowlers used to warn the non striker before running them out, this time around, Ashwin had not warned him, though as per the ICC rules, the batsman is out. Ashwin had said it was instinctive though it has been accused by many as a deliberate act,and as many are critical of Ashwin not warning though the wicket is well within rules, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has tweeted that he was surprised by Ashwin not warning Butler, and was reminded of Ashwin doing the same in an international match where Sehwag withdrew the appeal for wicket.
