Title - Ranna, Producer - M Chandrasekhar, Direction - Nandakishore, Music - V Harikrishna, Cinematography - Sudhakar S Raj, Cast - Sudeep, Rachita Ram, Haripriya, Devaraj, Prakash Raj, Avinash, Sadhu Kokila, Sharat Lohitashva, Chikkanna, Tabla Nani, Dharma, Muni and others. With a familiar subject - uniting the estranged family members the present style of making is what counts for the cash registers to ring. ‘Ranna’ is copied from Telugu film ‘Attarintiki Daredi’. Even this Telugu cinema script was rewritten from earlier film script of ‘Kalisundam Raa’. For discerning viewers the remake of ‘Kalisundam Raa’ in Kannada ‘Ondagona Baa’ has strong similarities to this ‘Ranna’. In ‘Ondagona Baa’ V Ravichandran united the broken hearts and in this Kichcha Sudeep reunite the families.
What is in 2000 is the same in 2015 but lavish making is the difference. The high point of ‘Ranna’ is firstly Sudeep. The one and only stylish actor who have strong similarities of Dr Vishnuvardhana - so graceful and looks glorious throughout. The image building exercise is done via sidekicks like Tabla Naani, Mico Nagaraj, Chikkanna characters. Sudeep never disappoints and it is only the second half that gives yawns. The wish of Grandfather Sharat Chandra (Prakash Rai) is to bring back ‘Saraswathi’ (Madhubala) and he wants to have lunch with all family members. In the empire of Sharat Chandra business Saraswathi holds 20 percent share. Sharat Chandra entrust the responsibility to his grandson Bhargava (Sudeep).
To barge inside the house with real identity is not that easy for Bhargava. With affluence on his side Bhargava first save the life of Saraswathi husband Prakash (Devaraj). To get inside the house he discloses that he is just a driver returned from Dubai. In the house of his aunt, Bhargava now Chandu solves a few tough problems and that confirms Saraswathi on the real identity of Chandu. Soon it is a gate pass to Chandu from the house. He returns again but his tough task is solved from the same episode that happened 25 years ago. It happened with Homa (ritual) on the one side and gun wielding Sharat Chandra on the other side countering his daughter, tragedy strikes. Similar is after 25 years with Bhargava and aunt daughter but at a railway station. Sudeep is the wonder of this film. His action portions, dialogue delivery style, graceful presence, comedy at places, emotions - he is such a classic actor.
He is too good a family actor and also looking after the needs of his fans. We see strong shades of Dr Vishnuvardhana in his acting potentiality and histrionics. Dynamic star Devaraj is another silent wonder of this film. Madhoo grace is missing. Prakash Raj is sidelined, Chikkanna, Tabla Naani, Muni are terrific. Satyajith and Mico Nagaraj have short presence, Avinash, Sharat Lohitashva have nothing challenging. Rachita Ram has potential and beauty to express like Haripriya a senior actress. Rachita Ram extra stint in romantic moods is superb. Sudeep with a few of his earlier heroines passes quickly in what to do...song. Harikrishna takes us to his earlier scorings but never drops in melody and pep. Sudhakar in his camera work given a feast to the eyes. Editing is good, dialogues are well written to suit the image of Kichcha Sudeep. Nandakishore as director is sure to hit hat trick as his earlier two films ‘Victory and Adhyaksa’ are super hits.
Score - 7.5/10
