Last Friday, two films belonging to contrasting genres locked horns at the box-office. ‘Rang De’, a family-comedy entertainer, clashed with Rana Daggubati-starrer 'Aranya', which was billed as a jungle-based action-adventure drama.
The news is that, in a somewhat shocking turn of events, 'Aranya' has bit the dust. On the other hand, the Nithin-starrer has managed to hog a major share of the audience's attention. 'Rang De', which is Venky Atluri's third film, collected a share of Rs 10.50 Cr in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as of the end of Sunday. The 3-day figure is impressive. In the US, its run is decent, with the film clocking $275K in the first weekend.
‘Aranya’, directed by Kollywood maker Prabhu Solomon, had to make do with a mere worldwide share of Rs 2.30 Cr, with the US figures being abysmal.
The BO figures are on expected lines. 'Aranya' is a serious film and it was a big gamble. Since the visuals are not spectacular and the story-telling has got no highs in the second half, it couldn't pick up pace in terms of word of mouth. 'Rang De', on the other hand, is a more commercial film whose story has been woven around familiar elements.
'Thellavarithe Guruvaram', which released on Saturday, has been described as a mega-disaster.
