Kalyani Priyadarshan awaits the release of 'Ranarangam' on August 15. Starring Sharwanand, it has been written and directed by Sudheer Varma. In this interview, the 'Chitralahari' actress talks about her role in the movie, its crux, learning Telugu and more.

A different screenplay

I liked Sudheer Varma's narration a lot.  I knew that the screenplay is different.  The present and the flashback are narrated in parallel in the movie.  The audience will understand what I am saying when they watch it.  I would say that 'Ranarangam' tells the story of the protagonist.

A village girl

The film is narrated from the point of view of Sharwanand's character.  The story is based on his character in the main.  His is an intense role.  Without my character, you won't see anything emotional or lovely in the hero.  I have played a village woman's role.  This is the first time in which I have sported a 'langa voni'.

The rise of a common man

The crux of the story is about how an ordinary man grows into a dreaded don.  It's nothing similar to 'God Father'.  This is the story of a don. Sharwanand's character comes with two shades and they have two different variations.  I like gangster movies personally.

Happy about the retro role

I have watched the movies of the 1980s on TV.  At times, I feel that I should have lived in that era.  I am very happy to have played a role that is similar to the heroines of that era.

Right choices in Telugu

I am a Malayali who was brought up in Chennai.  I know both Malayalam and Tamil.  I never thought that I would become a heroine.  I am starting to learn Telugu of late.  My mother is very happy about my choices in Telugu cinema.  The people are very passionate in Tollywood.

Wish to be a director

I have this wish to wield the megaphone but I can't say when I will be doing it.  I have got some ideas.  When they are developed into stories, I will definitely turn a director.

Acting in dad's direction

I am happy to have been directed by my father, Priyadarshan, in the Malayalam movie 'Marakkar'.  My dad said nothing about my performance during the shoot.  But once done, he complimented me as a filmmaker, saying that I gave the output he needed.
