Ram Gopal Varma ka Challenge

Ram Gopal Varma does it bold. He goes on to dare. His movies always leave trails of hubbub. His on-hold future release ‘Rann’ is already running into controversy. The song in the movie, “Jana Gana Mana Rann Hai” had been in the bad books of the Central Board of Film Certification ever since it was made. A filmy version of our National Anthem, the song is said to go against the guideline 219 of section 5B2 of the Cinematography Act and adding words to ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is violation of the National Honour Act of 1971. But the director is not the one who would amend his work and is planning to fight back at the board. He has made thorough research and found out similar movies which have in a way made use of National songs. He retorted, “I have a dozen instances of the National Anthem having been used in several Hindi films for different reasons. I’m going to present my case to the tribunal with the research that we’ve done. I’m hopeful I will get justice.” His movie list includes Rang De Basanti, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Krazzy 4, on all which he has based his evidence. Confident that he will win over the Supreme Court’s judgement, RGV said, “I have tremendous faith in the Indian judicial system”.

Well, now going by his movie references, these movies had only used the National song and Anthem in very bland manner in tune with public sentiments and without much alteration; unlike Varma’s song which has totally modified the Anthem of India. Let’s now wait for the final verdict of the court.
