Boyapati Srinu's 'Vinaya Vidheya Rama' is hitting the screens this Friday. In this interview, he talks about the experience of making the film, working with Ram Charan, why he may never do a biopic and more.
What is the rationale behind the title?
Rama is Rama because he was a combination of modesty ('vinayam') and obedience ('vidheyata'). In my film, my Ramudu (played by Ram Charan) is loyal towards his family. How strongly obedient and loyal he is, you have to watch it on the big screen.
The hero's Rambo look is so perfect. What went into it? The Mega hero was recently saying that you told him about the look two years ago.
Ram Charan is looking like an Iron Man in the Trailer. The kind of matureness you are seeing in his body today was not there four months ago. We took our time to achieve perfection. We had no much time for the Azerbaijan schedule, actually. Ram Charan toned up his body in due time. He had just two months' time. I had told him that he will somehow do it. I didn't say more. From the time the story was visualized, till the time I was executed, the film wouldn't have been possible but for him.
There is an impression that 'VVR' is mostly about action sequences. Is it true?
All my films since 'Bhadra' are strong in terms of family emotions. Society comes second to my heroes. If there is enough scope in the story for other elements, I do infuse them. Besides the elements of mass action and family entertainment, 'VVR' raises a new point. I hope the audience will love it.
What explains the ensemble cast, including Prasanth and Sneha?
I didn't choose my actors randomly. For the character of the hero's brother who is an IAS officer, I was particular about casting Prasanth. I am particular about the age of my actors and their performance standards.
It is said that you are one director who can narrate everything so effectively. How do you achieve that?
Cinema is a celebration. Every artist has to believe in the director for a film to be made as a celebration. If I have to inspire confidence in my team, I have to exercise a lot to gain a grasp over the subject matter. I involve myself totally with my story. I narrate my stories with effects to my actors.
Vivek Oberoi is the main villain. What is in store in the movie as far as the antagonist is concerned?
When I approached Vivek Oberoi, his first reaction was that he won't do the movie. He told me he won't do another Telugu film unless it's better than 'Raktha Charithra'. I then said to him that he may want to listen to the character I have written for him. As soon as he listened to it, he was ready to give me the dates. He was committed throughout the shoot.
Why do you always go for lavish backdrops?
As far as I am concerned, a film has to be colourful. That's why my stories have an urban backdrop.
How was it teaming up with DVV Danayya?
The fruit juice may be mine but the glass has to be glossy. That's why a producer is of importance for every film. It was Charan who said that he would be happy if DVV Danayya is the producer. It's because of his sensible planning that the movie has come out so well.
What is the one thing you like the most about Mega Power Star?
What I like the most about Ram Charan is that nothing makes him complacent. He is always eager to achieve something more. He betters himself with every film. He is always greedy for perfection. With whoever I am working, I become a fan of that hero. While writing the script with Charan in mind, I imagined myself as an audience sitting in the front row and watching the movie. I do that for every hero.
With many directors across the country showing interest in making biopics, will you ever do one?
I can't do small films. I can only do what the audience expects from me. A filmmaker would do well not to go against the prevailing expectations from him. Suppose I do a biopic someday, it will necessarily have 'dammu' as an element in it.
