Rakul Preet Singh awaits the release of 'NGK' on May 31. In this interview, she talks about her experience of working with Suriya and Selvaraghavan, her character in 'NGK', the success of her latest Hindi flick, her liking for biopics and more.

Character in 'NGK'

'NGK' is a political thriller. My character is into politics. She is a strong character who understands her trade very well. She is an independent-minded woman whose mind can't be read easily. The director has characterized her in an exciting way.

Selvaraghavan's style

He asks the actors not to blink while delivering the dialogues. It took me 2-3 days to accustom myself to it. I would blink involuntarily in the beginning. He believes that blinking will affect intensity. Selvaraghavan sir has his own way of working with the actors. He expects his actors to go to sets with a blank mind. It's a different experience to work with him. The actor needs to be very focussed and controlled. Working with him helps an actor to know a new side of himself or herself.

Eccentric in its own right

His characters are eccentric in their own ways. In 'NGK', no character knows what the other characters have in mind. It's all very layered. I can't reveal much about the story as it's a political thriller.

Deep characters in 'NGK'

My character is equally powerful as Sai Pallavi's. Usually in our movies, the heroine becomes just a part of the hero's journey. 'NGK' is not like that. Selvaraghavan sir writes deep characters with a backstory of their own. Every character has a journey.

'NGK' is a fictional story. It's not inspired. It was a great experience working with Suriya sir. I have 3-4 scenes with Sai Pallavi.

Youngsters should take up politics

As responsible citizens, we ought to know what is happening in the country. It's easy to just blame and be a mute spectator. It shouldn't be like that. I think educated people should be in politics. Politics is one profession that doesn't have a set pattern. These days, people are coming out in higher numbers to vote. Youngsters should study politics, keep themselves informed.

Six releases in 2019

I will have six releases (including 'De De Pyar De' and 'NGK') this year. Last year, I was totally busy with film shoots. I can't do more than 4 movies at a time. It's not possible to do more. With different subjects and industries, you get to explore unfamiliar things - like varied dance styles, etc.

Unexpected response in Bollywood

I have been receiving a very good response for 'De De Pyar De'. I always knew the potential that the script had. But I didn't expect this huge a response. I am overwhelmed, very happy and grateful. I got emotional. The response has been great also because I have got screen space equal to Ajay Devgn sir. People commented a lot about my weight reduction. But I held on to it with determination. It's not about the time that you put into doing a film. It's about the quality. Aamir Khan makes a 'Dangal' and people talk about it for 10 years.

Character in Nagarjuna's 'Manmadhudu-2'

'Manmadhudu-2' deals with the story of a heroine who is much younger than the hero. I can't reveal more. I have a fantastic character in the flick. I wouldn't have done 'DDPD' had the script not required a Rakul to be cast opposite Ajay Devgn sir. Age doesn't matter as long as you are happy in a relationship. It shouldn't matter to others either.

Biopics would be great

I want to do a biopic if there is a nice story to tell. People don't know about some real heroines. There is so much to be told about real achievers like PV Sindhu. I would feel honoured to tell their stories. I am also open to digital media if something pathbreaking comes my way.
