In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, BJP has dominated and is forming the government at center again, with Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister for second term, while in TN, DMK swept the polls. The Lok Sabha elections had Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam contesting as well.

Makkal Needhi Maiam had secured close to 4% votes, and emerged number three in many constituencies, besides also securing close to 1 lakh votes in three constituencies of Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, which has been seen as an impressive show by the newly formed political party.

In a pressmeet held today, Superstar Rajnikanth spoke regarding the performance of Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam's performance and said that in just 14 months of formation of the party, contesting the Lok Sabha elections and securing close to 4% votes is a huge achievement, and congratulated Kamal Haasan.
