During a recent election campaign speech, actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam party president Kamal Haasan had said that Nadhuram Godse who killed Mahathma Gandhi was independent India's first terrorist, and following this speech he had been criticized by many including minister Rajendra Balaji, H Raja, Tamilisai Soundararajan among others.

Even from the film industry, people like Kasturi, Gayathri Raghuram, Vivek Oberoi had made comments against Kamal Haasan for his remark, and at the other end, Congress leader KS Alagiri and Dravida Kazhagam leader Veeramani had voiced out support to Kamal Haasan's views.

Following these developments, there have been demands to ban Kamal Haasan from campaigning and his party from contesting elections, besides also demands to arrest him for inciting communal hatred.
