A woman, who was allegedly distressed about not having a male child, pushed her five daughters into a well and killed them before jumping in and committing suicide.

The incident happened in the Barmer district of Rajasthan. The woman, who was the wife of a high-school teacher, had given birth to five girls in a span of 17 years. Her daughters were of the ages 13, 11, 9, 6, and 3. When the woman’s husband was away on duty, she took her daughters near the well and performed the unthinkable act. Reports and police investigation suggest that the woman was upset over not having a son, hence decided to take the extreme step. The headmaster of the school in which four of those girls were studying stated that the girls were really good in studies and that the eldest daughter was the topper of her class, with a score of 98 percent. The incident has immensely disturbed many people, including the family’s relatives.

“I would like to appeal that suicide is not a solution. Share trouble with friends, the solution will definitely come. If the people of the house do not listen then share it with the neighbours and others. In such cases, awareness campaigns are necessary,” SP Rashi Dogra said.
