Rains in Chennai Finally, Will the Good News Continue?

After a long and difficult wait, the rain Gods finally graced Chennai with showers on Thursday. The rain was reported in areas such as Velachery, Guindy, Porur, Pallavaram, and Semmancheri. In addition, the outskirt regions received heavy rainfall. With an ongoing acute water crisis affecting restaurants, schools, hospitals, and residents, it was indeed much-needed rain that the city received yesterday.
Already lack of sufficient rainfall in 2017 and 2018 had contributed to water shortages, drying up major water bodies and depleting the groundwater levels. Chembarambakkam, Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram lakes from which water is supplied to the city are almost fully dry. Thankfully the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted rain for the next six days in parts of Chennai. Hopefully, the situation will improve. Meanwhile, get the buckets out and save as much water as you can!
