The Centre for Information Systems (CRIS) revealed that the Indian Railways had earned Rs. 1,400 crore through cancellation of reserved tickets and Rs. 17.87 crore through cancellation of unreserved tickets in fiscal 2016-2017, in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query.

For revenue from reserved ticket cancellation, this represents a steep 25.29 percent increase compared to last year. While it is not sure whether more tickets were cancelled this year compared to the previous years, the increase might be attributed to the cancellation fees of the Railways. In November 2015, the Railways announced the new cancellation and refund policy, in which it doubled the cancellation charges.
