India’s former Test and ODI opening batsman Navjot Sidhu, who is also a very popular cricket commentator, has stated that the national politics would undergo a huge ‘change’ for the good as and when Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is made the party president his mother Sonia Gandhi.
Party leaders have been urging Rahul Gandhi, one of the most eligible bachelors in the country, for the past two years to take over the party presidentship from his mother whose health has taken a severe beating during the past eighteen months or so. On a visit to U.S. a few days back, Rahul Gandhi hinted at his willingness to take over as party president, affirming the faith of party leaders and cadres from all the States.
Pradesh Congress Committees in many States have also pressurizing the party’s central leadership by forwarding resolutions passed at their meeting calling upon Rahul Gandhi to take over the party’s reins. In all probability, the Congress’ Central Working Committee meeting which is to be convened soon after Deepavali may approve a formal decision to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the president replacing or succeeding Sonia Gandhi.
Commenting on Rahul’s proposed take-over of the paty, Sidhu has said that Rahul had gained a rich vein of experience by observing his mother from close quarters for the past few decades. Sidhu, who is a Minister for Home Affairs & Tourism in the Punjab Cabinet, said that Rahul could have become Prime Minister long back but he didn’t do so, which is proof of his good-heart and his tendency to let others outdo him.
“Today’s political scenario is very fluid but Rahul is doing well in swimming against the tide. A met Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi chief-minister, and sought his support; this was leaked to the media immediately. However, Rahul and Priyanka, whom I had met many a time, didn’t do so. People want trust-worthy leaders; Rahul would help everyone irrespective of party affiliation. He would usher in huge changes at national level after taking over the party and I’m proud to work under him,” concluded Sidhu.
