The Narendra Modi government's decision to demonetise high-denomination notes came on this day in 2016. The Prime Minister made the announcement and, overnight, people started queuing up at ATMs. The whole country was busy standing at the thousands of ATMs for withdrawing the new currency.
Slamming the shock therapy, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today came at Modi using strong language. "It’s 3 years since the Demonetisation terror attack that devastated the Indian economy, taking many lives, wiping out lakhs of small businesses & leaving millions of Indians unemployed. Those behind this vicious attack have yet to be brought to justice," he said.
BJP then tried to counter the criticism by presenting some data points. "The Modi government has been fighting a war against economic defaulters and corruption. The first major step was demonetization in 2016. Since then: The number of corporate tax filers has seen a steep rise, jumping to 9.38 lakh in 2017-18; a jump of 17.2% from 2016-17," it tweeted out.
