The new Congress government in Madhya Pradesh has announced farm loan waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh for farmers. The total budget is more than Rs 50,000 Cr. Rajasthan and Chattisgarh will also follow a similar policy.
Under pressure to practice populist policies, the BJP government in Gujarat has waived off electricity bills of large sections. Gujarat Energy Minister Saurabh Patel has announced a one-time settlement scheme in this regard. "Electricity connection of around 6.22 lakh consumers has been cut. They can deposit Rs 500 under the one-time settlement scheme and get back their connection. In urban areas, both BPL and non-BPL families will be able to avail this benefit, industries will not be given this benefit. The govt will have to bear a burden of Rs 625 Cr," he said.
Rahul Gandhi has said that he won't let Narendra Modi sleep until the loans of all farmers in the country are waived off. It has to be seen what BJP will do in other States where it rules.
