Raajneeti - Stills

Prakash Jha’s ‘Raajneeti’ has achieved the second highest opening weekend collections in the history of Indian cinema. ‘3 Idiots’ holds the record for the highest opening weekend but it has to be noted that it opened on a Christmas Friday and Monday too was a bank holiday.

At Rs. 33-35 cr Net Box Office Collections on its opening weekend (which is equivalent to approximately Rs. 50 cr Gross Box Office), this puts the film in a position to achieve record collections in the course of its theatrical run, especially as there is no big movie scheduled for release the next weekend, giving ‘Raajneeti’ an uninterrupted 14 day solo theatrical run.

Overseas as well, the opening weekend has been excellent. In fact in Australia and the UK, the film took a higher opening on Friday than ‘3 Idiots’.

‘Raajneeti’ is an ensemble cast film which does not feature any of the established male superstars of Hindi cinema, making this performance even more creditable.

Having pre-sold the Satellite TV and Music rights at a combined additional revenue of Rs. 22 cr, this makes UTV’s first film for the financial year 2010-11 a blockbuster, and heralds a great start to our best slate of movies ever.

One source from the single screen cinema Chandan in Juhu, said, “Bahut Time ke Baad aaj Chandan mein Black me ticket bik rahi hai” (translated “after a long long time at Chandan there is a sale of tickets in ‘black’ due to the demand to see the movie”).
