Claiming that the online battle royale PUBG engaged in activities that are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity, defence and security of the country, the Indian government banned PUBG Mobile under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act earlier this month.
Reports were recently doing the rounds that the PUBG corporation is in talks with Reliance Jio to bring back the game in the country. "We had initial talks with Jio Platforms to seek for cooperation opportunities, but nothing has been decided yet," a PUBG spokesperson reportedly informed a news agency. However, the government has clearly mentioned that it is highly unlikely that India will revoke a ban on PUBG anytime soon. A senior government official, who chose to remain anonymous, reportedly informed a news agency that a new ownership structure is unlikely to change the government's decision as of now. "The violent nature of the game has been the cause of many complaints from all quarters. That does not change with the change in ownership rights," the official stated. The online battle royale became a sensation when the game was released on iOS and Android devices. Even though it has remained one of the most successful games among young adults across the globe right now, on the downside, the adverse effects of the game have massively impacted the youth.
Following a clash in mid-June between the military troops in India and China over disputed territory which resulted in the death of 20 Indian soldiers, 59 Chinese based mobile apps, including the popular video sharing app TikTok, were banned in the country over data security concerns. Later, the government took up another list of such applications and examined them for violations to security and user privacy. Following this, a hundred other applications, including PUBG Mobile, were banned in the country earlier this month.
