Actor Prithviraj in a Facebook post demanded the decommissioning of Mullaperiyar dam in the wake of the rising water level and the fears over its strength. Extending his support to the 'Decommission Mullaperiyar Dam' campaign, Prithviraj wrote, "Regardless of what the facts and findings are or will be, there is no reason or excuse for this 125-year-old dam to exist as a functioning structure! It’s about time we put politics and economics aside and do what is right. We can only trust the system, and let’s pray that the system makes the right decision!". Actor Unni Mukundan and director Jude Anthany too came forward and joined the campaign. "Join us as we voice our concern to the entire nation. We believe our authorities would take necessary actions to bring the situation under control.", wrote Unni.

The controversy over Mullaperiyar dam between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, about the 125 year old dam on the Periyar river has been going on for several years. According to a recent report published by a United Nations Institute, Mullaperiyar Dam is one of the six dams in the world which are structurally weak and susceptible to failure on account of passage of time and natural calamities. As currently there is heavy rain lashing out in Kerala, the water level in the dam has crossed 136 feet and Tamil Nadu has given a warning. However, the Water Resources Department informed that there is no emergency situation existing to open the dam until it crosses 140 feet. It is to be noted that the dam failure would be catastrophic, and nearly 3.5 million people in Kerala will be affected.
