An auctioneer sold for an unbelievable $1.1 million a black sheepskin sweater worn by Princess Diana, breaking the record for any clothing item ever worn by the late princess, according to Sotheby’s. The sweater first garnered international attention when Lady Diana Spencer wore it to one of Prince Charles’ polo matches in June 1981, shortly after their engagement.

The single unique garment from the brand Warm & Wonderful instantly became cultural fodder; debates about its symbolism and close connection to Princess Di rapt the public media, fashion critics, and general viewers.

The sweater bid won by the bidder shot from $190,000 to its mind-blowing final price in the last 15 minutes of a two-week online auction. It also carries two letters written to Joanna Osborne, one of the eight co-founders of Warm & Wonderful, from Buckingham Palace. One of them was dated July 16, 1981, and requested repair or replacement, while another thanked for the restoration done to it.

The rediscovered black sheep sweater in the attic by Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, founders of Warm & Wonderful, evokes memories about how special their business had become with its charm that gave it memories of Princess Diana. They were happy that this heirloom now has a new home where it can carry forward the everlasting legacy of Princess Diana. This auction continues to drive home the point about how timelessly magical and fascinating her fashion choices and cultural significance are.
