Prince Harry's Legal Win Against Tabloid Sparks Family Rift

Recently speaking on ITV about his legal triumph against a prominent British newspaper, Prince Harry said it was a monumental victory but admitted it caused division inside the royal family. Harry spoke about the subject following a High Court judge's December 2023 decision that Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) illegally obtained personal information about him for broadcast in the ITV program Tabloids on Trial.

Harry went into great detail on the intrusive methods the tabloids used—voicemail hacking, illegal information gathering, and hiring private investigators to get credit card data and flight information.

Harry received £140,600 in December following a ruling by the UK High Court determining he had been subjected to extensive phone hacking by MGN from 2006 onwards. Justice Fancourt found that 15 stories MGN published about Harry used illegal tactics including voicemail hacking and private investigator use.

An MGN spokesman expressed relief at the clarity the decision offered and unreservedly apologized for prior transgressions, therefore confirming full responsibility and adequate compensation.

With the claimants standing for David against the formidable media behemoth, Harry compared the circumstances to a David vs. Goliath fight. In the documentary, other stars including Hugh Grant also revealed their legal conflicts with British tabloids.

Harry said it was a core piece of the estrangement when questioned about how his fight against the tabloids affected his family ties. Harry said, It would be nice if we did it as a family, even if he felt vindicated, expressing a want for family unity in following the court case.
