Ali Fazal and Pankaj Tripathi resuming their roles as Guddu bhaiya and Kaleen bhaiya, the third season of Mirzapur makes its comeback after a four-year break Emphasizing bloodshed and gore, this season flips the power relations. Though there are some positive aspects, Mirzapur 3 is more about the spectacle than it is about substance.
Taking it to new heights in this season, the show carries on its legacy of introducing violence and gore to Indian OTT platforms. Fundamentally, Mirzapur relates a story of Hindi heartland violence interacting with Indian politics and law enforcement. While Kaleen bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) laments his son's murder and plans his next action, the narrative starts up where season two left off and shows Guddu bhaiya ( Ali Fazal) and Golu (Shweta Tripathi Sharma) reveling in power after seizing the Mirzapur kingdom.
Directors Gurmmeet Singh and Anand Iyer strengthen the narrative by using sensible settings. Important sequences illustrating the changing power relations include the breaking of Kaleen bhaiya's statue and Madhuri (Isha Talwar) igniting her husband's pyre. The story gains complexity with the use of detailed graphics mapping the growing Mirzapur world.
Particularly noteworthy are performances by Ali Fazal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, and Anjumm Shharma in their respective parts. Anjumm and Vijay Varma give their characters flexibility and highlight emotional fragilities and gloomy aspirations. With their expressive performances, supporting stars Harshita Gaur, Rajesh Tailang, and Sheeba Chadha improve the lackluster screenplay.
The introduction of many characters and a slow narrative pace can be taxing even with the interesting twists and turns. Though her acting suffers sometimes, Isha Talwar excels as Chief Minister Madhuri. Though they felt underused, Rasika Dugal and Priyanshu Painyuli give engaging performances.
With Pankaj Tripathi mostly behind us for the season, the expected faceoff between Kaleen bhaiya and Guddu bhaiya is absent. The last feels lackluster, devoid of the pyrotechnics one would have after such a build-up. But the season promises a binge-worthy experience best savored with companions.
Though the drama and stakes are great, the style is really lacking. Mirzapur 3 merits a viewing for its acting, directing, and blood-stained, horror-filled moments Now available on Prime Video India, Mirzapur season 3 was created by Excel Entertainment.
