Director Shirin Sriram has once again raised allegations against filmmaker Sai Rajesh, claiming he plagiarized his story for the film "Baby." Sriram presented a book titled "Baby Leaks" containing evidence he says supports his claim. The controversy surrounds Sriram's upcoming film "Preminchoddu," which he directed and produced under his banner Shirin Sriram Cafe. The Pan-India film, releasing in Telugu on June 7th, is a multi-lingual project.
Sriram claims that in 2015, he conceived a story based on a newspaper article about a girl being killed by two boys. This story, he says, was later developed into a script featuring a girl from a "Basti" (slum area) who falls in love with two boys, one rich and one poor. Sriram claims he shared his script with Sai Rajesh, who promised to produce the film but never followed through. Later, Sriram discovered that Rajesh had produced "Baby," a film with a strikingly similar plot, featuring a "Basti" girl and two boys. Sriram, along with his co-writer Ravi Kiran, claims they have gathered evidence of plagiarism, which they have presented to the media through the "Baby Leaks" book. The book is available online in PDF format.
The legal team representing Sriram, led by lawyer Nikhilesh Togari, has sent a copyright legal notice to Rajesh. They also filed a case in Rayadurgam, Hyderabad in February 2023. Ravi Kiran, who collaborated with Sriram on the story, asserted that he has been aware of the plagiarism for a long time and is confident that justice will be served through the police, court, and media. Lawyer Nikhilesh Togari highlighted the detailed evidence presented by Sriram and expressed dismay at the alleged plagiarism. The police, he said, have registered a case against Sai Rajesh under various sections related to cheating, criminal conspiracy, and copyright infringement. Sriram's decision to release the "Baby Leaks" book aims to bring the alleged plagiarism to light and seek justice for his creative work. He asserts that Rajesh took advantage of their shared history and betrayed his trust, ultimately stealing his story.
