Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee has passed away this evening and his son Abhijit Mukherjee has officially announced the news to the nation. The 84 year old senior leader was admitted to the New Delhi Army Hospital after testing positive for COVID 19 a few weeks earlier and he went into coma and had to undergo a brain surgery earlier this month.

Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee has tweeted "With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri Pranab Mukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital and prayers, duas and prarthanas from people throughout India ! I thank all of You,"

Pranab Mukherjee who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017 has been a statesman for the past fifty years in the Indian National Congress and has served as minister for many portfolios during his long and eventful political life. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2019

Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee passed away in 2015 and he is survived by his three children Sharmistha Mukherjee, Abhijit Mukherjee and Indrajith Mukherjee.
