Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee passed away on August 31 in Delhi. Pranab who was in a deep coma and ventilator support suffered a septic shock due to his lung infection on Monday, hospital authorities had.
On August 10, Mukherjee had tested positive for COVID-19 and was operated on the same day for removal of a clot in his brain. Following the surgery, he developed a lung infection and had a renal dysfunction, doctors said.
Pranab, the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017, was born in the village of Mirati in Birbhum district of West Bengal. He pursued History, Political Science and Law courses from Kolkata University before becoming a college teacher and then a journalist.
He began his political career in 1969 after he was helped by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to get elected to Rajya Sabha on a Congress ticket. Since then he held many ministerial positions during his political career. Mukherjee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, last year.
