Popular Malayalam TV serial actor Nimisha, who is facing a probe for allegedly violating temple customs by stepping into 'Palliyodam' wearing footwear, has complained of verbal abuse and threat by unknown people via phone and social media platforms. Palliyodam is a ceremonial large snake boat built and used by Aranmula temple for the procession in Pamba River. According to the temple beliefs, women are not allowed to step into the boat, and wearing footwear is prohibited for everyone. After her pictures surfaced online, the actress faced sharp criticism for entering the Palliyodam without permission and for wearing footwear inside the boat.
Talking to the media on Wednesday, Nimisha said that she removed the photos as soon as she realized it was against the customs and tradition. "I did not know that stepping into the Palliyodam was wrong and it was meant only for the temple rituals. So, I deleted the photos soon. But, since then, I am facing threat and verbal abuse from unknown people," she told the media. She further added that the abusers are not sparing her family members too.
After the issue sparked a controversy, Thiruvalla police had registered a case against her based on a complaint by the Puthukulangara Palliyoda Seva Samiti. Section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) of the IPC had been imposed against Nimisha and her friend, who accompanied her.
