Australian police have charged Vatican finance chief Cardinal George Pell with multiple child sexual assault offences.

Pope Francis had handpicked Cardinal Pell to make the finance of the Vatican transparent. These charges come as a blow to the Pope who promised "zero tolerance" to sexual abuse.

The high-ranking Vatican official "strenuously" denied all charges in this long-running sexual abuse case. His first hearing will be at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 18.

76-year-old Pell had, last year, admitted to have "mucked up" and made "enormous mistakes" in responding to child sex abuse cases on priests.
