Actress Poonam Kaur has supported the Supreme Court's verdict that unmarried women are entitled to undergo safe and legal abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. As per the actress, a woman has every right to decide what she wants to do with the child, whether she is married or not.
Poonam also gave a consideration to the complexity of the issue. "I have seen women impregnate themselves to keep their marriage and financial security intact, whereas the man has to suffer all his life in multiple ways," Poonam wrote, opining that women should not weaponize the law for ulterior or selfish motives.
She also batted for uniformity and complete secularization of the abortion law. "There actually should be a ruling that churches and other religious places have no say in the issue. I have heard of many orthodox institutions influencing women's personal choices regarding abortions," Poonam said.
Recently, Poonam was in the news for criticizing the Gujarat government for remitting the punishment given many years ago to 11 people convicted for rape and murder in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case.
