In 2018, actress Poonam Kaur was made the brand ambassador of handlooms for Andhra Pradesh. Then Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu described her as a visionary on the occasion. Since then, it has been speculated that Poonam has plans to enter politics.

In her latest interview, she brushed aside the speculations. "I am fighting for myself, to make a place for myself. It has been like being thrust into the swimming pool when you don't know how to swim. I don't know how far it will go. Like movies, activism has happened to me without much planning," she said. "As a student, I used to look up to Naidu sir. To be called a visionary by him felt special," Poonam added.

"Politics came knocking on my door without an invitation. You don't have to be in politics to bring change. We have stellar achievers among the Padma awardees. Those ambitious people who want to mint money and wield power would tell you politics is a must. If you are genuine, you will not need political power. We need strong leaders rather than politicians," she added.

Poonam said that she wants to face the camera once again.
