The remission of the punishment given many years ago to 11 people convicted for rape and murder in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case has been a political topic. The Gujarat government has been attacked for the same by political rivals such as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

On Wednesday, multi-lingual actress Poonam Kaur took to Instagram and railed against the contentious decision taken by the Gujarat government. In her angry post, she recalled that former President of India Ramnath Kovind was against showing mercy for rape-convicted individuals. She also made a reference to the Disha murder and rape incident that took place in late 2019 in Telangana.

Poonam remarked that politics should be kept aside in such cases. She also urged the people of Gujarat to socially boycott the 11 individuals. "A social boycott of every kind is extremely necessary for goons like these, rather they are ferocious mad animals. The arguments on TV channels will die down. There will be another news story. And it will be used as a political opportunity (sic)," she added.

Poonam commented that politicians should behave themselves. "Any Minister in a responsible position will speak about the safety of women and it is needed. But then there is a Minister who speaks about the undergarments of a reputed woman (sic)," she wrote.

Poonam also made a reference to the recent gang rape case in Hyderabad, besides incidents like Sugali Preethi's.
