We already know that Ponniyin Selvanis Mani Rathnam's dream project. While many veteran actors including, MGR, Rajini and Kamal tried to make it into a movie, it is only Mani Rathnam who has now brought this dream to life.
Mani Rathnam earlier in the year 2011 planned to make Ponniyin Selvan into a movie and also had his dream cast ready. But the movie did not materialise and was dropped mid-way. In the audio launch function, Rajini also revealed that Mani did not cast him in the movie in spite of him requesting a role for him to play.
Mani who just gave a smile at that time has now revealed the real reason for not casting Rajinikanth in the movie. Mani said that "If Rajinikanth had to be cast, the story has t be modified according to his star status. or I will receive backlash from his fans, If I do so I will be getting counterblast from Kalki fans. Keeping this in mind I decided not to cast Rajinikanth in this movie."
Ponniyin Selvan has music by AR Rahman. Produced by Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, it is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. Ponniyin Selvan was originally intended to be a stand-alone film but it was later split into two parts. The first part is scheduled to have a worldwide theatrical release on 30 September 2022 in both standard and IMAX format
