Director Mani Ratnam's dream project 'Ponniyin Selvan Part 1' stormed the silver screens this Friday. Tamil literary world's magnum opus novel of the same name has been finally adopted on the big screen after 70 years.

'PS1' opened to great reviews from the general audience and it also gained an astonishing critical response. It was released worldwide in five languages and IMAX format. The film starring Chiyaan Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai and Trisha had a record-breaking opening day collection at the box office.

The production houses, Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies released the official box office report of 'PS1' through social media a few hours ago. As per the statement, Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 has minted more than Rs 80 crores worldwide just on day 1 alone. With the weekend going on and the Pooja holidays ahead, the movie is expected to break many more records at the box office.

Ponniyin Selvan is the 6th highest opening day collection in Kollywood history and slides into the top three day 1 collection of 2022. The overseas opening is the second highest for a Tamil movie after Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kabali. The film has gained positive word of mouth and more hype than ever. Now, all eyes are on the sequel and it would be no surprise if it clinches the best opening collection in the entire Tamil cinema.
