'Ponniyin Selvan: I' hit the screens yesterday (September 30) on a big scale across languages. The Mani Ratnam-directed magnum opus made Rs 4.50 Cr (share) in the Telugu States from the Telugu version on the first day.
The multi-starrer's Tamil version took off to a flying start in the US. It pulled off a new record for a Tamil movie by grossing $2 million from premieres and Day 1. By doing so, it has pipped the previous record held by the Tamil movie Rajinikanth's 'Kabali'.
The box office performance overseas has been described as incredible by observers.
At the Hindi box office, despite competition from 'Vikram Vedha', the Karthi-Vikram-Jayam Ravi starrer minted a Nett. figure of Rs 2 Cr in India.
The traction the movie is going to have on Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be keenly observed, especially in Tamil Nadu, the US, and the Telugu States. Since the stakes are high, the movie will have to do huge business.
