Tamil cinema's most ambitious multi-starrer saga was set off with the grand theatrical release of 'Ponniyin Selvan 1' yesterday. It is the official adaptation of Amarar Kalki's world-famous novel. The master filmmaker Mani Ratnam has successfully adopted the book for the big screens while many legends in Kollywood failed to do so. This is his dream project.
'PS1' opened to great reviews from the general audience and it also gained an astonishing critical response. It was released worldwide in five languages and in IMAX format. We already broke to you that the film registered a record opening the overseas premiers. It is the second highest-grossing Tamil film at the USA box office next to Kabali (2016).
The hot news is that Ponniyin Selvan minted a huge opening day at the Indian box office, grossing Rs 39 crores approximately. In Tamil Nadu, the movie has collected around Rs 25 crores on Day 1 approximately, which is the highest for a non-Rajini, non-Vijay and non-Ajith film. As per the trade analysts, PS1 now has the third-highest opening day collection in this year's Kollywood movies surpassing the day 1 gross of Vikram, Cobra and Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu.
Ponniyin Selvan has a good shot at the first-weekend record in the state, currently held by Beast (Rs 66.80 crores). The ticket sales increased for the weekend and more shows are getting added to high demand which ensures collection of more than Rs 20 crores on each weekend. As the weekend is followed by the Aayudha Pooja holidays, the film is expected to gross more than 100 crores in Tamil Nadu alone within a week. There is a possibility of PS1 surpassing the overall collection of Vikram.
