Brothers Yempada Chandrasekhar (ITI-Electrical) and Yempada Gopinath, a B-Tech graduate, who were involved in 51 chain snatching cases in Vizag, have been caught by the Visakhapatnam police. They had started their crimes in order to obtain money for their addiction to Fortwin, an analgesic used to treat pain.
Inspector of Police, M. Avataram had been appointed as the leader of a special team due to the increased chain snatching incidents in the area. Explaining their modus operandi, he said: “The brother duo would use shirts which can be worn from both the sides and use black helmets while committing the offense. The bike-borne chain snatchers would reverse their shirts after relieving their targets of the valuables to evade police.”
The brothers were finally caught and 1142 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs. 34 lakhs and 5 bikes were seized from them. 90% of the stolen items have been recovered. The mother was also arrested for her involvement in disposing of the stolen jewellery. CCTV Cameras were helpful in catching the pair. Cash awards were presented to the police officers by the Commissioner Mahesh Chandra Laddha, in order to appreciate their efforts.
