The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear a petition against the police action on the students of Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim Universities. Senior advocate Indira Jaising had approached the court, asking for the matter to be heard urgently.
She asked the highest court to take suo moto cognizance of the issue, saying that it is a "very serious human rights violation all over the country".
On his part, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said, "Just because they happen to be students, it doesn't mean they can take law and order in their hands. This has to be decided when things cool down. This is not the frame of mind when we can decide anything. Let the rioting stop."
