The Income Tax Department has revealed that due to pending taxes, the Poes Garden residence of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha has been frozen and is under the department's control. There have been discussions to turn Jayalalitha's residence into government memorial, and conflicting opinions on this, and at such situation, this information has been revealed.
Following a case filed in the Chennai High court regarding the conversion of Poes Garden residence of Jayalalitha into memorial, the court had sought the response from Income Tax department as there were different opinions and rising opposition to turn it into a memorial. Following this, the Income Tax department has provided its answer today to the court.
In their reply petition to the High court, the Income Tax department has answered that since 2007, the Poes Garden residence has been frozen. It further detailed that, due to pending asset taxes of 10.13 crores and income tax of 6.62 crores, the Poes Garden residence, Hyderabad residence, a shop near Gemini flyover have been frozen by the IT since 2007, and added that if the taxes are paid, the Income Tax department does not have any concerns in turning the Poes garden residence into a memorial. Following this, the High court questioned on who will be paying the pending taxes, and has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to provide the answer for the same within 2 weeks.
