The Pattali Makkal Katchi, a self-styled protector of Tamil culture and moral police who have gone after several film personalities on earlier occasions, has targeted Dhanush this time. Party leader Anbumani Ramadoss has expressed regret at Dhanush for smoking in his recent release ‘Mayakkam Enna’.

The former Union Health Minister, in a statement, said that the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Rules 2011, which came into effect from November 14, made it mandatory to carry scrolls with messages highlighting the ill effects of tobacco use, whenever a character in the film smokes.

"The Act also makes it mandatory to give a disclaimer regarding the ill-effects of such products in the beginning and halfway through the film. But the movies released after the rules came into force failed to comply with the order. There are smoking scenes in the recent release Mayakkam Enna but the rules are not followed," he said.

The PMK leader urged the Central and State governments to take appropriate action to ensure that the rules are implemented properly.
