Indian-American economist Abhijit Banerjee, along with his French-American wife Esther Duflo, who was a former advisor to USA's ex-president Barack Obama, and Michael Kremmer from the US, won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics on Monday for his experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.
Stating that India is proud of his accomplishments, PM Modi has shared a picture of his meeting with the Nobel laureate. Modi's post on Twitter read, "Excellent meeting with Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee. His passion towards human empowerment is clearly visible. We had a healthy and extensive interaction on various subjects. India is proud of his accomplishments. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours." The research conducted by this year's Laureates has reportedly considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty. In just two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research.
Dr. Banerjee opened up on the meeting soon after and stated, "The PM was kind enough to give me quite a lot of time and to talk a lot about his way of thinking about India, which was quite unique. Because one hears about policies but one rarely hears about the thinking behind them."
Mumbai-born Abhijit Banerjee, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, becomes the second person of Indian origin to win the Nobel Prize for Economics after Amartya Sen in 1998.
